Chery Jaguar Land Rover: from agreement to a factory project
Two announcements marked different stages of JLR’s Chinese manufacturing partnership.
21 MARCH → 18 NOVEMBER
On 21 March 2012, Jaguar Land Rover and Chery announced terms for a proposed equal joint venture. Manufacture, research and development, engines and sales were within its intended scope; official establishment still lay ahead.
November: approval and a foundation stone
By 18 November, government approval and a manufacturing licence had been received. The partners laid the foundation stone at Changshu, near Shanghai, and confirmed the name Chery Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Company Ltd.
The RMB 10.9 billion project included vehicle manufacturing, an R&D centre and engine production. It also envisaged a partnership brand for the Chinese market.
What the announcement established
The November release planned completion of the Changshu facility during 2014. It records a construction milestone in 2012, not the start of vehicle production. It does not establish that a particular customer vehicle was built there; vehicle origin requires its own identification records.
Historical reference card: the dates describe announcements and project stages, not a photograph of an operating factory.
