Saudi Arabia letter of intent: a feasibility study
The December agreement opened an investigation into a possible automotive facility.
LETTER OF INTENT / FEASIBILITY
On 11 December 2012, Jaguar Land Rover and Saudi Arabia’s National Industrial Clusters Development Program signed a letter of intent. They would study whether an automotive facility in the kingdom was viable.
Why aluminium was relevant
The release identified possible opportunities in aluminium component production, linking the discussion to JLR’s experience with the aluminium Jaguar XJ and new Range Rover body structures. This described an area for investigation.
What had not been agreed
Discussions remained preliminary. Investment, capacity and job creation had not been discussed in detail. The announcement therefore records a feasibility initiative, not an approved factory, a production launch or an identified Saudi-built model.
Its significance in the 2012 archive is the distinction between exploring a manufacturing option and committing to a facility. It supplies no basis for assigning a production origin or specification to a customer vehicle.
Historical reference card: the dates describe announcements and project stages, not a photograph of an operating factory.
