Defender XTech: utility bodywork with a distinctive specification

The special edition changed the finish and equipment without replacing the working Defender’s core layout.

The Defender XTech returned in July 2012 with a distinct exterior treatment and more cabin equipment. UK coverage on 9 and 10 July described the 90 Hard Top and 110 Utility Wagon, with prices starting at £27,995.

At a glance

  • July 2012 UK special edition.
  • 90 Hard Top and 110 Utility Wagon in the cited UK offering.
  • Orkney Grey or Nara Bronze with black detailing.
  • 2.2-litre diesel, six-speed manual and 360Nm.

Two colours with a black contrast

Orkney Grey and Nara Bronze were paired with a Santorini Black roof, wheel arches and headlamp surrounds. Black chequer plate on the bumper and sills reinforced the utility appearance, while a Defender graphic identified the rear.

The package also used body-coloured grille treatment, gloss-black bonnet lettering and LED rear lamps. Sixteen-inch Sawtooth wheels with MTR tyres were a particularly visible part of the specification.

More comfort within the original cabin

The interior combined Ebony trim with contrasting Lunar stitching and Land Rover identification in the head restraints. A body-coloured centre section linked the cabin to the exterior.

Air conditioning, ABS, traction control, remote central locking, heated seats and a heated windscreen expanded the equipment list. These were useful additions to the Defender format; they did not turn the vehicle into a new generation or create a new dashboard architecture.

The existing diesel continued

Power came from the 2.2-litre diesel through a six-speed manual gearbox, with 360Nm quoted. The special edition’s story therefore lies chiefly in its finish, wheels and equipment, rather than a newly introduced engine.

The 90 and 110 names identify different wheelbase and body choices. The cited UK versions should not be broadened into a claim that every worldwide XTech offering had the same body list.

Why edition details matter

Individual black accessories are insufficient to establish a complete factory XTech specification. When identifying an older Defender, its original market, body, colour and equipment records are more useful than one visible trim feature.

The historical starting price describes the UK announcement, not a current valuation.

Germany’s Rough II was a separate regional offer

The German announcement of 30 August 2012 described Rough II with the related two-colour appearance, Saw Tooth wheels and Ebony part-leather trim. Limited to 150 vehicles in Germany, the 90 and 110 Station Wagon versions were listed at €39,600 and €43,600, with deliveries from November.

The German body choices, equipment and prices belong to that offer. They should not be substituted for the July UK XTech Hard Top and Utility Wagon specification.
