Jaguar and Land Rover awards: what the different votes recognised
Reader interest, design juries and editorial choices measured different things.
2012 / AWARDS
Jaguar collected several different kinds of recognition during 2012. A readers’ vote, a review-traffic award and an editorial design prize should be read on their own terms rather than combined into a universal ranking.
January: readers selected the XF and C-X16
On 27 January Jaguar reported that XF had won the imported upper-middle category in auto motor und sport’s readers’ poll, receiving 45.8% of the category vote. The overall poll covered 311 models and drew 116,000 participants.
Earlier, on 12 January, the C-X16 concept received recognition in the What Car? awards. A concept award describes a design proposal, not the specification or ownership record of a production car.
May and October: two different XF honours
The 17 May Honest John announcement was based on interest in published reviews: XF led the large executive category. It was not an instrumented comparison or a vote by every owner.
On 22 October the Southern Group of Motoring Writers chose XF as Car of the Decade at its tenth-anniversary event. That was a journalists’ selection across the group’s retrospective period.
Autumn design recognition
The new F-TYPE received Autoweek’s Paris Best in Show award, announced on 3 October. On 12 October Jaguar reported C-X16’s Design Concept Car of the Year title in the Scottish awards. These recognised different vehicles and different stages of development.
December: the car and its designer
Jaguar’s 6 December announcement recorded Ian Callum’s selection among Top Gear’s Men of the Year, reflecting his design work. The 20 December US announcement recorded a Men’s Journal Gear of the Year honour for XKR-S. Neither announcement introduced a new engine or model generation.
Using an award when researching a car
First identify the organiser, category, market and voting method. A positive design judgement does not establish reliability, current condition or fitted equipment. For those questions, the vehicle’s build information and inspection remain more useful than an awards total.
June: XF overall winner, Discovery heavyweight class winner
The 14 June Jaguar announcement named the XF 2.2D Premium Luxury overall Towcar of the Year. The 13 June Land Rover release named Discovery 4 winner in the 1,900kg-plus category for a third successive year. Overall and class awards were different outcomes within the towing programme.
The XF release listed a 1,850kg maximum towing weight and 75kg towball limit for the specified car. Discovery’s release distinguished standard Trailer Stability Assist from Towing Assist supplied with the optional Surround Camera System. These figures and features must stay attached to their particular vehicles.
