Jaguar XF rear-lamp recall in Japan: corrosion from a vent tube

The identified cause linked a rubber ventilation tube to corrosion inside an LED rear lamp. The correction distinguished the tube from the complete lamp unit.

GAI-1835

Jaguar Land Rover Japan filed recall Gai-1835 on 9 May 2012, with work scheduled to start on 10 May. It covered 984 XF vehicles in the Japanese record, including several petrol variants and XFR.

The issue could leave parts of the LED brake-light and tail-light functions unlit. The explanation was unusually specific: material in the lamp’s ventilation tubes could contribute to corrosion of the LED circuit board.

At a glance

  • Japan filing: 9 May 2012; stated start: 10 May.
  • Campaign: Gai-1835.
  • 984 listed XF vehicles.
  • Concern: corrosion affecting LED brake-light and tail-light circuits.
  • Remedy: sulphur-free vent tubes; revised lamp unit where the specified functions were not working.

A material interaction inside the lamp

The filing stated that sulphur in the rubber ventilation tube could react in warm, moisture-containing airflow and produce corrosive sulphur-containing gas. The affected electrical boards could then deteriorate, leaving some LED brake or tail-light elements unlit.

The accompanying explanation distinguished the lamp’s different functions. It did not claim that every reversing light or direction indicator was subject to the same LED-board mechanism, nor that a body-control software update was the remedy.

The official scope

The Japanese list included 775 XF 3.0, 82 XF 4.2, 109 XF Super V8, seven XF Premium Luxury and 11 XFR vehicles. The combined import period ran from 22 January 2008 to 23 December 2009. These were import dates, not a new model launch.

The filing recorded 22 fault reports and no accidents at that time. It also cautioned that a broad VIN interval could contain vehicles outside the affected specification. The Japanese population should not be extrapolated into an unsupported global total.

Two levels of correction

All affected vehicles were to receive sulphur-free replacement ventilation tubes. Where the relevant brake and tail-light functions were not illuminating, the rear lamp unit was also to be replaced with a countermeasure component.

That distinction preserves the actual campaign instruction. It was not a statement that every car needed a complete new lamp, and it did not prescribe replacing an unrelated electronic module.

Why the campaign remains useful context

The case shows how a lighting fault can originate in a material interaction around an electronic assembly. It does not establish the cause of every later XF lamp failure. Individual specification, inspection and campaign history remain decisive.

The record is an account of a May 2012 recall. It does not certify current roadworthiness, confirm completed work or imply that JLRTECH is an authorised recall repairer.

Historical campaign information. Applicability and completion must be checked against the individual vehicle’s VIN and market records.
