Jaguar X-Type and S-Type headlamp recall in Japan
A weakened internal support could break and leave the beam pointing down, with normal adjustment no longer possible.
GAI-1809
On 13 January 2012, Jaguar Land Rover Japan filed campaign Gai-1809 for headlamp assemblies on certain X-Type and S-Type vehicles. The Japanese record listed 16,947 vehicles across 13 type designations.
The concern was an internal plastic support used in reflector aiming. It was not simply a bulb replacement campaign, and it did not establish a defect in every headlamp fitted to either model worldwide.
At a glance
- Japanese filing and start: 13 January 2012.
- Campaign identifier: Gai-1809.
- 16,947 listed X-Type and S-Type vehicles.
- Concern: insufficient strength in a plastic reflector-adjustment support.
- Remedy: replace the affected headlamp assembly with a sound unit.
How a manufacturing condition affected beam aim
The official explanation traced the concern to insufficient drying of material during moulding of the plastic adjustment support. Residual moisture could leave the part with inadequate strength. With continued use, road vibration could break the support.
The result could be a downward-pointing beam that could no longer be adjusted normally. That is different from a failed bulb, a dirty outer lens or an unsupported assumption about an electronic control module.
Two model families in the same campaign
The list included X-Type 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 V6 variants, with estate versions among the relevant designations, and S-Type V6, V8 and R variants. The overall Japanese import period extended from 25 June 2001 to 12 February 2008.
The total was a national campaign population, not the number of lamps known to have broken. The filing recorded 55 fault reports and no accidents at the time. Its VIN tables also warned that broad intervals could contain vehicles outside the affected specification.
The correction replaced the assembly
The prescribed measure was replacement of the affected headlamp assembly with a good unit. The supporting diagram located the internal aiming support and identified the assembly as the replacement component. It did not describe replacing only the bulb as the campaign solution.
For a surviving car, exact lamp specification and previous repairs matter. A matching model name cannot establish eligibility, completion or the cause of a current lighting complaint. The historical record explains one defined issue without turning it into a general diagnosis or an offer of official recall work.
