Jaguar XK Artisan SE and XKR Special Edition

Artisan upholstery brought a different character to Jaguar’s V8 grand tourer. The British XK and the wider international Special Edition programme shared an idea, but their specifications were not interchangeable.

Jaguar introduced its international XK and XKR Special Editions on 15 February 2012, followed by the British XK Artisan SE announcement on 17 February. Their emphasis was the cabin: carefully chosen leather, trim and equipment, supported by restrained exterior changes. These were additions to the existing XK family rather than the arrival of a new generation.

For an archive, the distinction between the two announcements is useful. A photograph, an edition name and a registration year can suggest a specification without proving it. Separating the British offer from the international programme gives a clearer account of what Jaguar actually announced.

At a glance

  • British Artisan SE: XK coupé and convertible.
  • International Special Edition: XK and XKR, with availability dependent on market.
  • Artisan describes the interior treatment; it does not identify one universal engine specification.

What made the Artisan cabin different

The visible change began with scraffito-grain leather on the seats and selected cabin surfaces, paired with Poltrona Frau leather for the headlining. Jaguar specified Navy with a Jet headlining or Truffle with a Canvas headlining. Shadow Walnut and Dark Figured Aluminium were the two trim choices. These combinations made the edition more coherent than simply adding a different seat colour.

For someone identifying a car today, the complete combination is more useful than any single detail. A replacement seat, wheel set or trim panel can change the appearance of a used example. The original build information should therefore accompany photographs when a precise specification matters.

Comfort and controls were part of the package

Heated Performance seats with 16-way adjustment for each front occupant, a heated steering wheel and a 525-watt Bowers & Wilkins system were included. Keyless entry and starting also formed part of the announced equipment. Dedicated sill plates and stainless-steel pedals added smaller visual changes.

Those features describe the launch specification. They are not a diagnosis of a current car or evidence that every function is still present and working. An archive is most useful when it keeps the original equipment list separate from the condition of an individual vehicle.

One design idea, different market offers

The British release listed Celestial Black, Polaris White and Rhodium Silver, together with polished 20-inch Orona wheels. Its international counterpart described a broader paint and wheel selection and covered the supercharged XKR as well. Jaguar expressly excluded North America from that Special Edition programme.

This is why a worldwide equipment list should not be pasted into a British Artisan SE description. Equally, the British launch prices belong to the XK offer; they should not be attached to every XKR wearing similar cabin trim. The market and model must remain attached to each specification.

The V8 distinction underneath the trim

Britain’s Artisan SE used the naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8, rated at 385 PS. The wider Special Edition announcement also included the 510 PS supercharged XKR. Six-speed automatic transmissions were specified. Both body styles used Jaguar’s bonded and riveted aluminium structure and adaptive damping.

Power output is not the only reason to retain the XK/XKR distinction. When discussing an electronic component or replacement part, the exact vehicle and fitted equipment should be established before drawing conclusions. A shared cabin treatment does not make two powertrains or their supporting systems identical.

Dynamic mode is not the Dynamic Pack

The February international announcement also mentioned an optional Dynamic Pack for standard XKR coupé and convertible models for the following model year. It was a separate chassis and performance package. That reference should not be turned into a claim that every Artisan or Special Edition had it.

The distinction is especially easy to lose because the regular driving controls also included a Dynamic mode. A selectable mode and an optional hardware package are different pieces of information. For an individual car, check the build specification rather than relying on the word “Dynamic” in an advertisement.

Historical prices, with their context intact

The British announcement priced the XK Artisan SE coupé at £77,350 and the convertible at £82,500 on the road. These are historical UK launch figures. They are not current values, Lithuanian prices or a guide to the cost of restoring a particular car.

Read together, the announcements show a mature grand tourer being developed through materials and specification. The story is more precise when the cabin, market, engine and body style are considered together, instead of treating “Artisan” as a universal technical definition.

Keys and electronics: start with the actual car

If a present-day enquiry concerns access or starting, describe the symptom and identify the car before selecting a service. Include the VIN, the keys available and any earlier work. An edition badge cannot establish which repair or programming operation is appropriate.

Our Jaguar and Land Rover key programming page explains the service context. For a control-unit enquiry, use the separate module programming and adaptation information. The historical specification in this article does not promise support for every replacement unit.
